GRADES 1-5
WE, IN DICKSON COUNTY, HAVE SET OUR ACADEMIC GOALS AND GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES ONE THROUGH FIVE. THESE GOALS ARE BASED ON STANDARDS WE EXPECT EVERY CHILD TO MEET. THE STANDARDS REFLECT NOT ONLY OUR EXPECTATIONS BUT ALSO THOSE STATE STANDARDS DEFINED BY THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
YEAR AFTER YEAR, DICKSON COUNTY STUDENTS SCORE WELL ABOVE STATE AVERAGES ON STANDARDIZED TESTS OF READING AND MATH. THIS ACHIEVEMENT IS DUE IN LARGE PART TO OUR PROCEDURE OF STATING GOALS AND SYSTEMATICALLY PROVIDING INSTRUCTION WHICH MOVES TOWARD MEETING THOSE GOALS.

GENERAL PROMOTION GUIDELINES
A STUDENT MUST PASS READING TO BE PROMOTED.
IF A STUDENT PASSES READING BUT FAILS TWO OTHER SUBJECTS, HE/SHE MUST BE RETAINED.
A STANDARD GRADING SCALE WILL BE USED FOR FIRST THROUGH FIFTH ON THE REPORT CARDS, ISSUED EVERY NINE WEEKS.
A - SUPERIOR (93 - 100% OF WORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT)
B - ABOVE AVERAGE (85 - 92% OF WORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT)
C - AVERAGE (75 - 84% OF WORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT)
D - BELOW AVERAGE (70 - 74% OF WORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT)
E - EXCELLENT
F - FAILING (BELOW 70% OF WORK IS COMPLETE AND CORRECT)
N - NEEDS IMPROVEMENT
S - SATISFACTORY
U - UNSATISFACTORY
THOSE GRADES WILL BE BASED ON A COMBINATION OF TEST GRADES, DAILY GRADES, WORK HABITS AND GENERAL PERFORMANCE.
WHILE RESOURCE STUDENTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO MEET THESE MINIMUM COMPETENCIES, THEY SHOULD BE USED AS GUIDELINES, AND THE DECISION TO PROMOTE OR RETAIN A RESOURCE STUDENT WILL BE BASED ON A COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHER AND THE RESOURCE TEACHER. RESOURCE TEACHERS WILL SIGN REPORTS OF GRADES THEY HAVE SUBMITTED.
HOMEWORK
IT IS IMPORTANT FOR STUDENTS TO DEVELOP A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY, PARTICULARLY IN PREPARATION FOR LATER GRADES. HOMEWORK WILL BE ASSIGNED ON A CONSISTENT BASIS THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR.
6. IF A STUDENT HAS BEEN RETAINED ONCE AND IF A STUDENT BY THE END OF THE FIRST NINE WEEKS OF HIS/HER SECOND YEAR IN THAT GRADE IS NOT MEETING THE MINIMUM SKILLS, THAT STUDENT SHOULD BE SCREENED TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE.
FIFTH GRADE READING
FIFTH GRADERS SHOULD MASTER SKILLS AND READ FLUENTLY WITH 70% ACCURACY DISTANT VOYAGERS.
FIFTH GRADE MATH
THE STUDENT SHOULD MAINTAIN A 70% AVERAGE TO PASS MATH FOR THE YEAR.
FIFTH GRADE ENGLISH
THE STUDENT SHOULD MAINTAIN AN AVERAGE OF AT LEAST 70% TO PASS ENGLISH FOR THE YEAR.
FIFTH GRADE SPELLING
THE STUDENT SHOULD MAINTAIN AT LEAST A 70% AVERAGE TO PASS SPELLING FOR THE YEAR.

SECOND GRADE STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE, WITH 70% ACCURACY, TO ANSWER 40 ADDITION AND 40 SUBTRACTION PROBLEMS FOR NUMBERS IN COMBINATIONS 11 THROUGH 18, IN 15 MINUTES EACH.
SECOND GRADERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO WRITE TO 1,000, COUNT BY TWOS, FIVES, TENS AND ONE HUNDREDS TO 1,000, AND KNOW HUNDREDS, TENS AND ONES PLACE VALUE, ALL WITH 70% ACCURACY.
SECOND GRADE SPELLING
A STUDENT SHOULD HAVE A YEARLY AVERAGE OF 70% IN ORDER TO PASS
SPELLING FOR THE YEAR.
SECOND GRADE LANGUAGE
BY THE END OF SECOND GRADE, A STUDENT SHOULD BE ABLE TO COMPOSE SIMPLE SENTENCES, USING CORRECT CAPITALIZATION AND PUNCTUATION.
SECOND GRADE HANDWRITING
