HAPPENINGS AT SCHOOL

A Note from the Principals:<= /b> On Monday, April 19, 2010 the students at Charlotte Elementary School are scheduled to begin taking the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program or TCAP. Our students will be taking this test each day during the = week of April 19. It is of utmost importance that your = child is at school each day so they may take this required test. We ask the child= ren to come to school on time, well rested and ready to try their best. Students who arrive after testing has begun will not be allowed to enter their class= room until a scheduled break time. The TCAP is a battery of assessments = used to measure your child’s academic achievement and academic gains from grade level to grade level. The results of this test are used to evaluate a= student’s achievement, academic gains, teacher effectiveness, a school’s overall academic progress, and a school system’s academic performance in rela= tion to other school systems in the state. This assessment is both state and federally mandated under the NCLB. Because of the extreme importance of this assessment please encourage your child to do his or her very best when taki= ng this test. There are several things to help your child prepare for the test= : 1. get enough sleep each night, 2. eat a healthy breakfast (a healthy breakfast increases a child’s attention by 20%), 3. make sure your child is on = time for school, 4. read with your child and ask questions about what he/she is reading, 5. check your child’s homework and ask them to explain how t= hey worked the problem. Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Woodard would like to take this opportunity to commend our students and teachers for all of their hard work= in preparation for the TCAP. Both groups have worked many hours so that Charlotte Elementary School will cont= inue to move forward academically. We would like to thank everyone who participa= ted by donations, merchandise, and support in the CES silent auction and Chili Supper. It was a great success and so much fun. The baskets were wonderful.= A special thanks to the cafeteria staff for all your help in = the kitchen with our chili supper. We must say goodbye to several of our wonderful staff. Mrs. Polly Cross, Mrs. Carolyn Fizer and Mrs. Rachel Gresham. We will miss yo= u!

A Note from Nurse Mary:<= span style=3D'font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Comic Sans MS"'> As warm weather approaches, = we can expect to see an abundance of ticks. This is a good time to remind your children to check themselves carefully for ticks after playing outside. Tick bites should be watched for signs of infection such as redness and drainage= . Please seek medical attention if any of the following occurs after a tick bite: 1) rash around the bite area, 2) a fever and chills, 3) unusual tiredness, 4) muscle aches and joint pain, and 5) swollen glands. The American Cancer Soc= iety urges all of us to Slip! Slop! and Slap! Slip on a shirt to protect your skin with clothing. Slop on sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.&= nbsp; Slap on a hat wi= th a wide brim.

Extended Child Care<= /span>: CHILD CARE WILL BE= OPEN THE WEEK OF SPRING BREAK APRIL 5 – 9. We are open from 6am until 6pm. THE CHARGE WILL BE $16 PER DAY AND YOUR CHILD WILL NEED A LUNCH = AND DRINK. We will have summer child care beginning Wednesday May 26. If you are interested in spring break or summer child care please call 740-5811 after 3:00pm.

CLASSROOM NEWS:<= /b>

Title I News: We held a Title I Math Make-and-Take Workshop on Tuesday, Jan.26, 2010. It was held in the cafeter= ia at CES at 6:30 p.m. The workshop was for the parents of children in gr= ades k-5. Childcare and refreshments were available. Each child received a = free book and there were several door prizes given away. Many thanks go to Mrs. = Michelle Hooper, Ms. Kristin Corbitt, Mrs. Kim Hinson, a= nd Mrs. Julie Outlaw. They did an awesome job preparing materials and presenti= ng ideas. Thank you for your hard work and dedication. There was a wonderful turnout of parents for this workshop. We hope to see more of you at fu= ture workshops. We also want to thank you for returning your surveys as qui= ckly as you have and be very supportive. Thank you.

Art= : The art room is busy right now with a lot of big projects. 5^th graders are working= on weaving, memory boxes, and origami. 4^th graders are creating sock puppets with a lot of personality! 3^rd graders are making = 3-D castles out of shoeboxes and mixed media. 2^nd graders are also making a 3-D project, which are houses and their surroundings. They are usi= ng milk cartons to make these houses and adding their own elements to the proj= ect. 1^st graders are making flowers as they learn the parts of a flow= er, and painting their own garden. Kindergarten is finishing up an Opposite Book they have been working on and are also painting their own garden. Thank you to all the wonderful art= ists at CES.

Pre-School: Mrs. Hilary's class just wrapped up their lessons on "Pete's a Pizza". They enjoyed a variety of pizza-themed projects as well = as taking turns being Pete and having classmates turn them into a pizza. In the upcoming weeks, students will be introduced to new concepts like more/less, same/different, using descriptive words and relating stories and events to others.

Mrs. Carolyn's class had a great time reading "Caps for Sale" and wrap= ped up their work with painting caps and acting out the story as a group. They are starting "The Little Red Hen" and will be exploring measurement concepts, practicing counting skills, identifying numerals and recognizing words with the same beginning sound. As nearly all of the students will be moving on to Kindergarten, they are also practicing classroom behaviors and how to give their personal information. Everyone in Pre-K is really looking forward to the spring weather and finishing the school year in a fantastic way!=

Kindergarten: Kindergarten celebrated their 100^t=
h day of school with collecting, sorting, measuring, and counting. Mrs. Michelle and her students age= d 100 years that day!! We also cele= brated Dr. Seuss day with lots of reading, rhyming, and silly words. Students of all ages enjoy a good = Dr. Seuss book. Reading is especi= ally nice when others read to us. = That is exactly the treat we had when Jr. High students came to read to each Kindergarten class. The Jr. H= igh students gained the experience of reading to Kindergarten students and the Kindergarten students enjoyed their readings. Thank you to all the Jr. High boys= and girls! Special Ed: The Special Education Team was very busy with helping with the silent auction project for the year, also collecting tabs for Ronald McDonald House. The highest collection so far was 2^nd grade with 18 1/2 pounds.=

First Grade: First grade has been working very hard this past= nine weeks. We enjoyed playing in = the snow and building snowmen, but we’re happy to be back in school on a regular basis again. First, we celebrated the 100^th Day of School a= s well as Valentine’s Day. The= n, we sampled some Chinese cuisine for Chinese New Year. And, most recently, many of us had= a special visitor on St. Patrick’s Day! That silly Leprechaun! He can be so amusing! We’ve = been hard at it with learning to tell time on “face clocks” to the hour, = half hour, and the quarter hours. = And, we’re all becoming “money experts” at counting coins up t= o $ 1.00. Almost all the first gr= aders earned the homerun for the Ozzie Club in A.R. We are all working hard in A.R. and learning to read fluently. All the first graders are working hard in power block to master skills needed for second grade and beyond. Everyone in Mrs. Weatherspoon's room is members= of the Ozzie Club. Congratulations! Everyone is also a member of the Book= worm Reading Club. Keep up the good reading.

Second Grade: The second grade classes collected the most pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. As a reward, they received time in the bouncing house along with pop= corn and lemonade. Many of the second grade students also made a Home Run in the Nashville Sounds Reading Club. They are still working hard to earn AR point= s. We also had a second grade Read-In, which rewarded some students for their = hard work. The students will be working hard the last nine weeks = to prepare for Third grade. We’ve been working hard on state standa= rds. Ms. Parchman’s class all scored a homerun in = the Sounds Ozzie Reading Club. They are also all reading at 85% or higher in A.= R. Keep up the good work!!!!

Third Grade:<= /u> Third grade took a Field Trip to t= he Renaissance Center-to the Planetarium. The shows included Star Gazing-Secre= ts of the Sun-Force 5. Third Grade has been workin= g hard on state standards for TCAP. = We were very pleased with the outcome of our third Think Link test. Please remember that we have TCAP = testing the week of April 19. We need everyone here with a full stomach and lots of encouragement from home. Please remind your child that scho= ol is not over until May 26^th!!! Thank you= for your support.

Fourth Grade: The fourth grade would like to tha= nk Mrs. Jackie Elston for planning the field trip to TP= AC. The fourth grade had a great day and really enjoyed the Fisk Jubilee Singer= s.

Fifth Grade:<= /u> Aaron Daniel won first place for t= he 4-H promotional poster. Aaron’s poster will be the cover for our Dickson County’s 4-H books next year. Congratulations Aaron! Mrs. Batey’s 4-H Demonstration Winners are: Ivy Sloa= n, Aaron Daniel, Lamontae Collier, Brooke Honeycutt.
