HAPPENINGS AT SCHOOL

A Note from the Principals: We would like to welcome everyone back to Charl= otte Elementary School after our holiday break.= We ask you to please let the office know of a change in address or p= hone number. We must have a working phone number in case of emergency or closure= of school. The county school number for possible delay or school closing is 441-1994. We would like to re= mind parents of several policies and procedures we follow at CES to further ensu= re school safety and security. The morning bus room and breakfast opens at 7:15 a.m. each morning. Early arrivals for bus room before 7:15 will require enrollment in the CES Child Care Program - a fee will be charged for this service. Students arriving after 8:00 a.m. are considered tardy. All visito= rs to the school are required to check into the office, sign in, sign out, and obtain a visitor’s pass before going into the building beyond the off= ice. Our students may stop you in the hall and ask you to go to the office to ge= t a visitors pass. This is a safety issue we talk to our students about. All co= nferences with teachers should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance during a teacher’s planning time. Our teachers have a planning time every day. Parents of afternoon car riders must have a name card with the child’s name clearly marked. Your child’s learning is important to us and we = urge all students to be in school. Please remember, if you check out your child early, they are missing vital class time. Thank you for your continued support of our policies and procedures so that we may better serve, protect, and promote the welfare of= our students. A Note of Thanks from the Principal: During the Christmas Break, my family and I had a house fire that destroyed= our home. While this was a very sad event for us, I have to say that we have mu= ch to be thankful for in the new year. We are bless= ed with our health, family and friends AND a wonderful community which has hel= ped us to overcome this unfortunate fire. I want to say THANK YOU to everyone w= ho has helped my family and me to get our lives back to as close to normal as = can be. You are all precious to me and I appreciate you! This is the time of year when the weather is cold. Please make sure your child is pro= perly dressed before they leave for school. Because of the season we see a lot of lost jackets and sweaters, so please put your child’s initials and gr= ade inside the coat. Please have = your child look in our lost and found for their missing items. We donate many unclaimed items of clothing to Goodwill because we cannot identify many garments. A timely reminder as we begin the flu season. Please remind your child how important it is to wash his or her hands. Hand washing after using the restroom, before eating and after sneezing, coughing, or blowing his or= her nose can help keep everyone healthy. As always, I am available to an= swer any questions - feel free to stop by my office or phone me at 740-5815.

Nashvi= lle Sounds Reading Club. The Nashville Sounds Baseball Club sponsors a Reading Program to encourage and reward students for reading. The purpose of the program is to tie children’s natural affection for baseball to the bi= gger goal of promoting literacy and encouraging a lifelong love for reading. The program supports our schools in their ongoing endeavor to build strong readers by creating exciting incenti= ves and rewards for children who continue to read more throughout the year. Charlotte Elementary uses the Accelerated Reader program in conjunction with the Sounds’ program to monitor students’ achievements. Age, grade level and reading ability are all taken into consideratio= n to set attainable goals. The Rea= ding Club is an eight-week program, which will start soon. There are many individual prizes f= or reaching their goal. See you at the ball game! Mrs. Petty, Librarian.

Chall= enge Class: The students in Challenge have been working on cultures around the world. They have been comparing types of government imports, exports, populations and the people. They are currently working on= a project contrasting two different countries from one continent. =

3^rd Grade: Enrichment c= lasses this past 9 weeks were on different types of media. We talked about the benefits and drawbacks of TV, newspapers, internet, and radio. 5^th Grade: Math Enrichm= ent included problem solving and algebra. Students who have a good grasp of the current math in their class attend the math enrichment class on Thursdays.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> RTI: (Response to Intervention) 1<= sup>st Grade students attend a “Power Block” teaching time 4 days per week. All the students go to an enrichment or remediation class for 1 hour. Each class does different activities such as Reading Theater, work games and activities, or intense work on reading and vocabulary. The students are assigned to each class based on teacher recommendation and bench mark testi= ng done 3 times a year.

P.E. News: Physical Education classes just finished a unit on basketball skills. Students worked on= the skills of dribbling and shooting. Shooting Uno and Can Ball incorpora= ted math skills which added an additional challenge for the students.  This was a very successful unit and we can't wait= to see the skills put to use on the court. In the next few week= s, students will participate in a cooperative game unit, volleyball unit, a tennis/badminton unit, and a track and field unit.

News: Title I would like to thank you for the wonderful response to our two worksh= ops held in 2009. We started off with our Annual Meeting in November with Julie Outlaw presenting a workshop on Math. In December, we had a very informative workshop on Reading for grades K-1 presented by Donna Rigdon. Our next workshop will be on January 26, 2010 from 6:30-7:30 = in the school cafeteria. This workshop will be for grades K-5 on math Ma= ke-and -Take. Please try to attend, we provide free books, refreshments, and door prizes. If you need extra materials, the Parent Center in Dickson will help you. Just call Kristi Gilbow.

TLC: The kids in TLC learned the song "Santa C= laus Is Coming to Town." They went caroling and shared their song with the people in the office and both Preschool classes. They did a great job and we were very proud of them.

They all returned from the Christmas break happy and ready to go! One of our babies, Karsen, turned a year old over the break and came back walking! We had Wyatt Daniel to come back to us on a full time basis. They have learned so much s= ince the beginning of the school year. They can count to 100 not only by ones, b= ut also by tens and fives! They know all of their colors and we are up to the "Q" on our letters! Some really good news is we have a new staff member in TLC. Ms Monica Mays has joined our family as our part time aide. The kids love her and we told her she couldn't leave us because one of our parents gave us a T-shirt with TLC and our names on it! So now she has = to be a permanent fixture around here! TLC is where tender loving care goes on! Thanks to all of our parents for their continued support! Happy New Year!

Pre-School classes: <= /span>Mrs. Hilary's and Mrs. Carolyn's classes were very busy in December. There were lessons about the seasons changing from fall to winter; activities foc= used on all of the wonderful holiday things we do each year; new songs and games were learned and students have really been working on self-help skills like putting on and taking off coats, hats, mittens and scarves. There were holiday celebrations and a number of new students were welcomed to the Preschool. We're looking forward to focusing on winter themes in the upcoming weeks. One bigger announcement: Mrs. Hilary and Mrs. Carolyn would like to announce the arrival of four-legged friends: a guinea pig in = each classroom (one a gift and one an adoption), at this time both are named Piglet. That will change. If anyone has old newspapers you don't need anymore, Mrs. Gedge would like to have them to put in the bottom of my guin= ea pig cage under the bedding.

= KINDERGARTEN AND TRANSITION CLASSES: The Kindergarten classes enjoyed an exciting day at the Pumpkin Patch. We learned about Indians, sat in a tipi, shucked corn, went on a hay ride, wandered through a maze, and picked our very own pumpkins! Thanks to = all parents who helped make the day successful. Also, some Kindergarten 'scientists' won recognition at the CES Science Fair. Congratulations= and keep experimenting. We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break. We are back at school and ready to learn. Please continue to encourage your child to love learning.=

= FIRST GRADE: First graders have been learning about Indian customs, homes, food, and tribal life. Students came up with their own Indi= an name and painted Tee-shirts using Indian symbols. Mrs. Gooch invited Mrs. P= enny Plumlee and her daughter, Tia, to help introduce us to more Indian culture.= We heard music, saw beautiful native dress, and woven baskets. Tia is a champi= on dancer and explained the importance of the drumbeats to her dance. The Plumlee’s live in Cumberland Furnace and they are very proud of their Native American heritage. All children chose The Dickson County Humane Soci= ety as their Service Learning Project. We collected items and money to help the animals. Thank you everyone who helped contribute. They really did apprecia= te all of our help. Ms. Karen Anderson, John Crow, and a representative from t= he animal shelter came with their dogs, Jake and Foster, to teach us how to ta= ke care of our pets. The dogs did some very good tricks for us and the children were allowed to pet them.

SECOND GRADE: The Second Grade finished up the first = half of the school year on a positive note. We have been working on AR and bring up our points. We have also been working on math fa= cts, addition and subtraction with re-grouping. The second Grade as a community service project collected thirteen boxes of food for the Dickson Help Cente= r. Ms. Parchman's entire class is reading at 85% or better in A.R. Keep up the good work!!!

THIRD GRADE: Thi= rd grade teachers do require students to take at least ONE AR test every week,= so please encourage your third grader to keep up and READ!! We also are beginn= ing the Nashville Sounds reading challenge. Third graders need 10 points = to make a home-run and earn all Prize Coupons! Read! Read! Read! We also enjoyed our Christmas movie field trip! Thanks parents for your suppo= rt and help. We are planning a trip to Renaissance Planetarium soon. This year there have been some changes in our Math objectives, one of them is to know their time tables. Please encourage your child to start working on memorizing them. The 3rd graders enjoyed a field trip to The Roxy Theater on December 17th. They saw the movie, A Christmas Carol and had a = lot of fun. Remember to practice multiplication flashcards each= day at home. At this point, please focus on the 0's-5= 's. Other math skills that can be practiced at home are counting money and tell= ing time.

FOURTH GRADE:

The fourth grade had a very busy 2nd nine weeks.  In November, many fou= rth graders participated in the Science Fair. We had so many great p= rojects. Also, the fourth grade took part in the Winter musical. We would really like to thank Mrs. Jackie for all the hard w= ork she put into the program. We are really looking forward to the f= ield trip on March 11th with Mrs. Jackie.
