Information about the Guidance Department at CMS
Counseling - I will talk with your child about any problems or concerns your child might be experiencing. If you would like to refer your child to speak with me, please feel free to contact me. (Contact information is listed at the top of this page.) Your child’s counseling is confidential to everyone (including all faculty members, family members, and administrative staff) except in the event that the information reveals harm to anyone else or themselves or if a court order subpoenas counseling notes for that student. Most of the time, students just want someone to listen.
Careers Class – I team teach 8th grade Careers class. I have some fun activities planned to help your child determine “what they want to be when they grow up!” The students work on a class project on the career of their choice, learn about budgeting, and take career interest inventories to determine what careers work best with their individual personality. In this class, we work on creating the student’s four year plan for high school as well. Each year, we hold a meeting with the Creek Wood Guidance Counselors to help each 8th grader plan their high school experience.
Strengthening Families – Our school receives extra funds to make this program available to families in our community. In the fall and spring, we offer a seven week free course (where you get dinner for free as well). The program focuses on strengthening the parent-child bond and serves as a wonderful support group for many Charlotte families each year.
Peer Mediation – If students need to work out any disputes with another student, I have a wonderful group of peer mediators who work with the students in my room at the Peace Corner. The students work together to develop a solution. Research has shown that using peer mediation in school greatly reduces the number of conflicts and bullying events.
Group Counseling – If the need arises, a group can be established that will focus on a special need. These students will meet in the counselors office confidentially during their flex time.
504s and S-Teams – As the counselor, I will take any referrals for a student for special education services. I have S-team packets that the child’s teachers, the parents, and myself must complete. When the packet is complied, an S-team meeting is held. If a student has a disability that impairs him or her at school, a Section 504 plan may be developed. If you need my services in reference to referring for S-team or Section 504 plan, please contact me.
