NDA Helps Young Readers Succeed!

NDA STUDENTS CELEBRATE READING

The Elementary students at New Directions Academy recently celebrated their third successful reading quarter of the 2003-04 school year.  The 14 students in three classes read more than 500 books during the winter 9-week term from January 6th to March 10th

For a book to be counted, a student correctly answered at least 4 out of 5 questions about the book’s contents, demonstrating comprehension.  The New Directions Academy uses the Accelerated Reader program, and at the end of each 9-week period, the classroom with the most AR points is recognized at the celebration by receiving the “traveling trophy” (a lava lamp), to keep in their classroom until next time.  The classroom reading the most books and the individual students earning the most points also receive awards.

Last October, Mrs. Deckard from the local UT Extension Office came as a guest reader for the celebration, and in December the NDA Library hosted an AR Points Store, where the students purchased toys and gifts with their AR points.
