THE ALL NATURAL LICE TREATMENT

Olive Oil

1. Apply olive oil to the head early in the   evening or it can be left on overnight.

2. Wear a shower cap or a plastic bag over the head so the oil does not come off. Be careful that the cap or bag does not cover the child’s face.

3. Allow the oil to remain on the head for 2-3 hours at a minimum to allow the oil to    suffocate the lice.

4. Before removing oil, section the hair into four parts. Divide each part into one inch by one inch sections. Comb through the section with a nit comb. After each comb through, rinse the comb in vinegar or hot water to remove the lice and nits from the comb. This will prevent lice from being returned to the head.

5. Repeat the combing process until the entire head has been combed.

6. Fingernails or tweezers can be used to remove the nits from individual hair shafts.

7. Shampoo the hair with your regular shampoo.

8. Rinse the hair with white vinegar and then with clear water.

9. Inspect the child’s hair to ensure that all eggs have been removed.

10. Clean the environment of lice. Wash bedding that the infested child has been laying on. Vacuum the furniture and carpet where the child has been in contact. Non-washables can be sealed in plastic bags for two weeks to make sure no lice survive.

11. Check scalp for nits daily for up to two weeks.

COMMERCIAL LICE SHAMPOO METHOD

Step 1

Selecting a lice shampoo can be confusing. You can check with the pharmacist at your local drug store, your physician or the school nurse for advice. Apply the lice shampoo according to the directions on the bottle. Leave the shampoo on the head for the amount of time recommended on the bottle. Leaving the shampoo on longer does not make it more effective but may cause your child to have scalp irritation. Rinse hair thoroughly.

Step 2

Dry the hair with a towel or hair dryer until it is completely dry. This helps loosen the nits from the hair.

Step 3

Wet the hair again and comb out the tangles with a regular tooth comb. While the hair is still wet, divide the hair into four parts using clips or pins to keep them separated.

Step 4

This is the combing step. Make sure you and the child are comfortable. Comb the hair using a special lice comb. Starting at the base of the scalp, work your way up section by section. The technique for combing is simple. One section at a time, start with the comb touching the scalp and comb the hair all the way to the end.

NOTE: All four steps must be repeated within 7-14 days. Follow the instructions on the label regarding the next time to repeat this process.
