The Discovery School

Think, Discover, Succeed
History of TDS

Our school opened its doors in July 1999 as Dickson County's only public, year-round school.  The building, formerly known as the First Baptist Church,  was purchased by the Dickson County Board of Education in 1998.  It was then used as the county's Alternative Learning Center for a year while construction crews worked feverishly to convert the building into an elementary school.  After a great deal of remodeling, the school was finally completed.  An attractive facility now houses twelve classrooms, two per grade level (K-5), a serving kitchen, and auditorium, a gymnasium, several offices, a library, a teacher/parent workroom, a guidance office, a speech office, a Special Education office/classroom, and a computer lab.  The gymnasium doubles as a cafeteria during lunch and houses Creative Care before, after school, and during intercessions.  Enrollment is capped at 20 per class in kindergarten through third grade and 25 per class in fourth and fifth grades.

TDS has several programs in which children may participate.  They include: D.A.R.E., 4-H, Student Council, Reindeer Run, 100-Day Celebration, Character Counts, Accelerated Reader, Yearbook, Recognition Night,  Dr. Seuss’s birthday, Buddy Readers, and Peer tutoring.

School Academics

Our school focuses on the curriculum aligned by our county.  We offer Accelerated Reader, Thinklink, Compass Learning, Rosetta Stone, Math Flash, and P.A.M.s in grades 3-5. Our Kindergartners work with  The Letter People program.  A variety of teaching styles and learning opportunities are provided daily to  meet the individual needs of our students.  Before and after school tutoring is also available to interested students.

Creative Arts in School

Every Monday, Mrs. Sherry Rochelle travels from Dickson Elementary to bring art education to the students at TDS.  On Wednesdays, Mr. Neil Brock comes from Dickson Elementary to bring music education to our students.  Second grade delights students and parents annually with “The Three Piggy Opera”.  Each year, a variety of grade level program presentations may be made to the student body.
